Academic Challenge

Westfield Insurance Academic ChallengeNow in its 47th season, Academic Challenge is not only an award-winning quiz show, but also one of the longest running, locally produced shows in television history.

This year, Academic Challenge will air Saturdays at 7:00 p.m. on Cleveland's WEWS, Channel 5. Host Jason Nicholas welcomes high school teams of three students each from Northeast Ohio to compete in five rounds of questions on the quiz show. The three highest-scoring schools will return at the end of the season to participate in the Academic Challenge championship.

Through our support of Academic Challenge, Westfield has provided academic grants for schools throughout Northeast Ohio for the past 11 years.

About Host Jason Nicholas

Jason Nicholas

Award-winning meteorologist Jason Nicholas has been the host of Academic Challenge since 2007. Jason, a native of Medina, Ohio, is a graduate of Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and Mississippi State University's Broadcast Meteorology Program.

Jason became the first meteorologist in Cleveland to hold the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) seal.  He is both a professional member and holder of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Seal of Approval and the National Weather Association (NWS) Seal of Approval. The History of Academic Challenge

Academic Challenge aired on WEWS from 1964 to 1999, and returned in 2003 when Westfield provided the title sponsorship. Jason Nicholas took over hosting duties in 2007 following anchor Danita Harris and former anchor Adam Shapiro. Past hosts include Don Cameron (1964-1975), former WEWS weatherman Don Webster (1975-1986 and 1994-99), Steve Wolford (1986-1988) and Lou Maglio (1988-1994).

Since its return to NewsChannel 5 in 2003, with the support of Westfield Insurance as title sponsor, Academic Challenge has been honored with 12 regional Emmy® Awards and 14 Emmy® nominations. In the 2007-2008 season, the program was honored as Best Regularly Scheduled Children/Youth Program by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences – Lower Great Lakes chapter.
