On Saturday, Dec. 3, News Channel 5’s Emmy award-winning quiz show, Academic Challenge began its 44th season with some updates. The long-running program will now air each Saturday at 7:30 p.m. But that's not the only change—Academic Challenge is now hosted in a brand new studio.
When Academic Challenge returned to television in 2003, producers reused the same studio as a previous, quiz show called It's Academic, which aired in 1964. As technology advanced, set and production changes were made accordingly, but the set was never completely redone.
In 2010, the decision was made to make over the studio. Updates included: replacement of entire studio lighting grid, wiring and lighting control system; installation of LED lights to save on energy consumption; and construction of a new solid, curved backdrop for a seamless transition from the studio walls to the floors.
In addition, new graphic animations were created with the help of Scripps Graphic Hub, team desks and host podium were re-faced with printed graphics, and with the new LED lights, the production team is now able to change the background colors behind team desks for different effects.
Tune in to Academic Challenge on Saturday evenings to check out the new set, and watch students from around the region compete in a battle of the brains!
